| thyroidectomy | Surgery to remove part or all of the thyroid gland. This might be done to remove a tumour or treat hyperthyroidism or goiter (enlarged thyroid gland). The goal of surgery in hyperthyroidism is to remove just enough thyroid gland so that a normal amount of thyroid hormone is produced. If too much thyroid is removed, the patient will produce too little thyroid hormone (hypothyroidism) and need treatment to return the thyroid status to normal (euthyroid). The complications of surgery can include vocal cord paralysis and accidental removal of the parathyroid glands (located behind the thyroid gland), resulting in low calcium levels (the parathyroid glands regulate calcium). (12 Dec 1998) |
| thyroidism | An obsolete designation for:1. Synonym: hyperthyroidism. 2. Poisoning by overdoses of a thyroid extract. (05 Mar 2000) |
| thyroiditis | <disease, endocrinology> Disease of the thyroid, especially Hashimoto's disease, in which autoimmune destruction of the thyroid takes place. (18 Nov 1997) |
| thyroiditis, autoimmune | A progressive disease of the thyroid gland with antibodies in the blood stream directed against the thyroid and infiltration of the gland by lymphoctes (a key type of white blood cells involved in the immune response). This immune response is against one's own thyroid. (it is autoimmune.) predominantly affects women. Can be familial. Also called hashimoto's disease or hashimoto's thyroiditis. (12 Dec 1998) |
| thyroiditis, hashimoto's | Autoimmune thyroiditis. A progressive disease of the thyroid gland with antibodies in the blood stream directed against the thyroid and infiltration of the gland by lymphoctes (a key type of white blood cells involved in the immune response). This immune response is against one's own thyroid. (it is autoimmune.) predominantly affects women. Can be familial. Also called hashimoto's disease. (12 Dec 1998) |

| thyroiditis, subacute | Inflammation of the thyroid gland after a viral illness. (12 Dec 1998) |
| thyroiditis, suppurative | Inflammatory disease of the thyroid gland caused by bacteria, fungi, protozoa, or flatworms. (12 Dec 1998) |
| thyroidology | The study of the thyroid gland, both normal and pathological. Origin: thyroid + G. Logos, study (05 Mar 2000) |
| thyroidotomy | Synonym: laryngofissure. Origin: thyroid + G. Tome, incision (05 Mar 2000) |
| lamina of thyroid cartilage | One of the paired (dextra et sinistra) thin quadrilateral plates of the thyroid cartilage that are joined anteriorly and form an open angle posteriorly. Synonym: lamina cartilaginis thyroideae. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| lateral aberrant thyroid carcinoma | <tumour> A cervical nodule of thyroid carcinoma situated outside the thyroid gland, formerly thought to arise from ectopic thyroid tissue but now believed to be metastatic from an occult carcinoma within the gland. (05 Mar 2000) |
| levator muscle of thyroid gland | A fasciculus occasionally passing from the thyrohyoid muscle to the isthmus of the thyroid gland. Synonym: musculus levator glandulae thyroideae, elevator muscle of thyroid gland, Soemmerring's muscle. (05 Mar 2000) |
| light cells of thyroid | Cell's present between follicles or interspersed among follicular cell's; they are rich in mitochondria and are believed to be the source of thyrocalcitonin. Synonym: C cell, light cells of thyroid. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lobes of thyroid gland | The two major divisions of the gland lying on the right and left side of the trachea and connected by the isthmus. A smaller pyramidal lobe is frequently present as an upward extension from the isthmus. Synonym: lobi glandulae thyroideae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lobules of thyroid gland | The subdivisions of the lobes, consisting of incompletely separated, irregular groups of thyroid follicles (20 to 40 in number) bound together by delicate connective tissue. Synonym: lobuli glandulae thyroideae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| long-acting thyroid stimulator | <endocrinology, immunology> A thyroid stimulating antibody which is directed against a receptor for TSH on the thyroid gland. This antibody acts like TSH and stimulates the thyroid to produce excessive amounts of thyroid hormone. The presence of this antibody generally indicates Grave's disease (hyperthyroidism). Acronym: LATS (15 Nov 1997) |
