| yellow nail | The complete or almost complete cessation of all nail growth, with thickening of the nails, increase in the convexity, loss of cuticles, and yellowing; the resulting onycholysis can cause loss of some of the nails; the condition is often associated with pulmonary disease but differs from clubbing in that the soft tissues are not hypertrophic. Synonym: yellow nail syndrome. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| Kuntscher nail | An intramedullary nail used for internal fixation of a fracture. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral border of nail | The sides of the nail extending from the proximal to the free borders. Synonym: margo lateralis unguis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| free border of nail | The distal border of the nail that overhangs the tip of the digit. Synonym: margo liber unguis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| fungal nail infection | The most common fungus infection of the nail is onychomycosis. Onychomycosis makes the nails look white and opaque, thickened, and brittle. Older women (perhaps because oestrogen deficiency may increase the risk of infection) and men and women with diabetes or disease of the small blood vessels (peripheral vacscular disease) are at increased risk. Artificial nails (acrylic or wraps ) increase the risk because when an artificial nail is applied, the nail surface is usually abraded with an emery board damaging it, emery boards can carry infection, and water can collect under the nail creating a moist, warm environment for fungal growth. Alternative names include tinea unguium and ringworm of the nails. (12 Dec 1998) |
| Papillon-Leage and Psaume syndrome | <syndrome> An inherited syndrome, lethal in males, with varying combinations of defects of the oral cavity, face, and hands, including lobulated or bifid tongue, cleft or pseudocleft palate, tongue tumours, missing or malpositioned teeth, hypoplastic nasal alar cartilage, depressed nasal bridge, brachydactyly, clinodactyly, incomplete syndactyly, and, frequently, mental retardation. There are two subtypes recognised. Type I (papillon-leage and psaume syndrome, gorlin-psaume syndrome) is inherited as an x-linked dominant trait and is found only in females and XXY males. Type II (mohr syndrome) is inherited as an autosomal recessive trait. Inheritance: autosomal recessive and X-linked. Synonym: OFD syndrome, orofaciodigital syndrome, Papillon-Leage and Psaume syndrome. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cervical rib and band syndrome | <syndrome> Very chronic axon loss brachial plexopathy, caused by compromise of the lower trunk fibres by a congenital band extending from a rudimentary cervical rib to the first thoracic rib; rare disorder, found mostly in young to middle-aged women, that presents with unilateral hand wasting and weakness, particularly involving the lateral thenar eminence; sometimes accompanied by intermittent discomfort along the medial forearm and hand. Synonym: cervical rib and band syndrome, classic cervical rib syndrome. (05 Mar 2000) |
| porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome | <syndrome> A syndrome characterised by outbreaks of late term abortions, high numbers of stillbirths and mummified or weak newborn piglets, and respiratory disease in young unweaned and weaned pigs. It is caused by swine infertility and respiratory syndrome virus. (radostits et al., veterinary medicine, 8th ed, p1048) (12 Dec 1998) |
| hand-and-foot syndrome | <syndrome> Recurrent painful swelling of the hands and feet occurring in infants and young children with sickle cell anaemia. Synonym: sickle cell dactylitis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| swine infertility and respiratory syndrome virus | A species of arterivirus causing reproductive and respiratory disease in pigs. The european strain is called lelystad virus. Airborne transmission is common. (12 Dec 1998) |
| syndrome, third and fourth pharyngeal pouch | See syndrome, digeorge. (12 Dec 1998) |
| third and fourth pharyngeal pouch syndrome | <syndrome> Also called the digeorge syndrome (dgs), this disorder is characterised by (1) low blood calcium levels (hypocalcaemia) due to underdevelopment (hypoplasia) of the parathyroid glands which control calcium; (2) underdevelopment (hypoplasia) of the thymus, an organ behind the breastbone in which lymphocytes mature and multiply; and (3) defects of the heart involving the outflow tracts more than from the heart. most cases of dgs are due to a microdeletion in chromosome band 22q11.2. A small number of cases have defects in other chromosomes, notably 10p13. Named after the american paediatric endocrinologist angelo digeorge. Another name for dgs is hypoplasia of the thymus and parathyroids. (12 Dec 1998) |
| Jervell and Lange-Nielsen syndrome | <syndrome> A prolonged Q-T interval recorded in the electrocardiogram of certain congenitally deaf children subject to attacks of unconsciousness resulting from Adams-Stokes seizures and ventricular fibrillation; autosomal recessive inheritance. Synonym: surdocardiac syndrome. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Fitz-Hugh and Curtis syndrome | <syndrome> Perihepatitis in women with a history of gonococcal or chlamydial salpingitis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| acrylic resin tooth | A tooth made of acrylic resin. (05 Mar 2000) |
