Parts per billion are used to determine the concentration of a chemical substance in a given volume. First of all, the volume is divided into a billion of equal parts. Each billionth part, that corresponds to the studied substance, is considered as a part per billion (PPB) of the substance. PPB are used to determine very small gas concentrations in the atmosphere.
