| ornithine decarboxylase |
[EC 4.1.1.17] a cytosolic enzyme of the lyase class that catalyzes the decarboxylation of ornithine to form putrescine; the reaction occurs in the conversion of arginine to spermine and spermidine and in the synthesis of γ-aminobutyric acid via putrescine. The enzyme requires pyridoxal phosphate as a cofactor and is concentrated in rapidly proliferating cells.
