growth medium <cell culture> A synthetic medium which is filled with nutrients necessary to the growth of microorganisms or cells being cultured in the lab.
(09 Oct 1997)
clearing medium A medium used in histology for making specimens translucent or transparent.
(05 Mar 2000)
minimal medium <cell culture> The simplest tissue culture medium that will support the proliferation of normal cells.
(18 Nov 1997)
cochleare medium A dessertspoonful.
Origin: L.
(05 Mar 2000)
motility test medium A culture medium with a concentration of agar that produces a less solid consistency than usual and allows motile organisms to grow away from the line of inoculation; used to differentiate species of bacteria.
(05 Mar 2000)
mounting medium <microscopy> Any liquid, polymer, resin, melt, or even gas used to mount microscopical specimens before examination. The chief attributes of a mounting medium are refractive index, viscosity, lack of colour and long-term chemical stability.
(05 Aug 1998)
complete medium <cell culture> A growth medium which supplies all of the nutrients and organic compounds necessary for a microorganism to grow, without forcing the microorganism to synthesise anything it needs on its own.
(05 Jan 1998)
complex medium <cell culture> A medium whose precise chemical composition is unknown.
Compare: defined medium.
(05 Jan 1998)
conditioned medium <cell biology> Cell culture medium that has already been partially used by cells. Although depleted of some components, it is enriched with cell derived material, probably including small amounts of growth factors, such cell conditioned medium will support the growth of cells at much lower density and, mixed with some fresh medium, is therefore useful in cloning.
(18 Nov 1997)
Mueller-Hinton medium An agar-based media composed of beef infusion, casamino acids, and starch useful in the isolation of gonococci and meningococci; the recommended medium for antibacterial susceptibility tests for most common aerobic and facultatively anaerobic bacteria.
(05 Mar 2000)
contrast medium A substance that is introduced into or around a structure and, because of the difference in absorption of X-rays by the contrast medium and the surrounding tissues, allows radiographic visualisation of the structure.
(18 Nov 1997)
HAT medium <cell biology, cell culture> A selective growth medium for animal tissue cells that contains Hypoxanthine, the folate antagonist Aminopterin (or amethopterin) and Thymine.
Used for selection of hybrid somatic cell lines, as in the production of monoclonal antibodies. In HAT medium, cells are forced to use these exogenous bases, via the salvage pathways, as their sole source of purines and pyrimidines.
Parental cells lacking enzymes such as HGPRT or TK can be eliminated whilst hybrids grow.
(18 Nov 1997)
Czapek-Dox medium A culture medium used for the cultivation of fungus species and for identification of Aspergillus and Penicillium species.
Synonym: Czapek-Dox medium.
(05 Mar 2000)
Czapek's medium <cell culture> An agar medium used to grow fungi and soil bacteria which feed on decaying organic material (called saprobes). The medium contents include sugars, water, and salt.
(09 Oct 1997)
xenobiotic medium chain fatty acid - coenzyme A ligase <enzyme> Partial amino acid sequence of enzyme from bovine liver mitochondria given I first source; has high sequence homology to human and rat sa protein
Registry number: EC 6.2.1.-
Synonym: xl-i ligase, xl-i carboxylic acid - CoA ligase
