or Hormone Replacement Therapy: technically this is the replacement of both oestrogen (estrogen) and progestogen by tablet, injection or transdermal patch. Sometimes this term is used even though the only hormone being replaced is oestrogen.

A program of subsidising the body's supply of hormones with additional hormones in order to restore vitality. The most common HRT involves oestrogen replacement for menopausal women. There is some concern that taking oestrogen after natural production stops might be harmful.
