The average horse is 15 to 16 hands. 17 hands is very tall and only unusual specimens reach 18 hands. Some horses, especially in the West, are smaller. Either merchantable or total is the distance from the ground to the top of the tree. In measuring total height the distance is measured usually in feet from the base to the highest point of the tree. In measuring merchantable height the distance is measured from the ground to a specified minimum top diameter.
