| HCG |
The hormone produced by the placental cells (afterbirth) in pregnancy. Detection of this hormone in blood or urine is the basis of pregnancy testing. The hormone mimics the luteinising hormone (LH), which is normally produced by the woman at ovulation time. Preparations of HCG are used to stimulate ovulation and are sometimes given following procedures like IVF or ICSI to help the embryo implant.

Its main action is to maintain the corpus luteum and hence the secretion of oestrogen and progesterone until the placenta has developed sufficiently to take over hormonal production. A hormone that increases early in pregnancy. This hormone is produced by the placental tissue. Its detection is the basis of pregnancy tests. It can also be used as an LH substitute to trigger ovulation in conjunction with clomiphene or gonadotropin therapy. The US trade names are APL? Pregnyl? and Profas?
