A popular abbreviation for electrocardiogram, which is the tracing produced by a machine that records the electrical activation of a heart beat. Sometimes an electrocardiogram is able to indicate whether a heart attack has occurred, but often an EKG is normal even though severe coronary artery disease may be present.
