| diabetic ketoacidosis | A severe metabolic derangement that occurs in the absence of insulin. Insulin allows the body to absorb glucose into cells for energy production. In the absence of insulin, the body starts to break down fats for fuel. A metabolic byproduct of fat metabolism is referred to as a ketone. | diabetic retinopathy | <ophthalmology, pathology> A major cause of blindness in diabetics. Retinal disease results from adverse effects on the blood vessels which supply the retina. Swollen retinal vessels which leak fluid into the retina are commonly seen on physical examination of the eyes.
