| colostrum |
Milk from a cow in the first 3 days post-partum. This first milk contains immunoglobulins or antibodies to infectious agents to which the mother has been exposed. These maternal antibodies are then absorbed by the newborn calf as a form of protection against disease. The protection provided for the calf is determined by the amount of colostrum ingested during the first 6-24 hours of life.
