A gene which, when damaged or mutated, puts the carrier at a much higher risk for developing breast cancer and/or ovarian cancer than the general population. In a woman with a BRCA2 mutation, the estimated lifetime risk of developing breast cancer is 50-60%. BRCA 2 and BRCA1 together account for about 80% of the breast cancer that occurs in women with strong family histories of the disease.
