A system of two types of nerves that oppose each other in their actions. One increases pulse and blood pressure, cools the skin, causes sweating, and activates the production of sugar; while the other counteracts these actions by slowing down the body. When we are under stress, the activating aspect of this system, the sympathetic nervous system kicks in. When we are relaxed, the quieting aspect of the system, the parasympathetic system takes over.
