antisense An RNA interference technique that may have application to treating HD. RNA molecules have very convoluted shapes and must be properly "folded" to work properly One promising antisense method causes RNA carrying the defective HD genetic information to misfold so that the defective huntingtin protein cannot be made. One advantage of this antisense technology is that it may permit the development of a "small molecule" drug that can be taken orally and pass through the blood-brain barrier.

antisense the complementary strand of a coding sequence (gene); often an expressed copy of an antisense sequence is transformed into a cell or organism to shut off the expression of the corresponding gene.
