| special aquatic site | Those sites identified in 40 CRF 230, Subpart E (i.e., sanctuaries and refuges, wetlands, mud flats, vegetated shallows, coral reefs, and riffle and pool complexes). They are geographic areas, large or small, possessing special ecological characteristics of productivity, habitat, wildlife protection, or other important and easily disrupted ecological values. These areas are generally recognised as significantly influencing or positively contributing to the general overall environmental health or vitality of the entire ecosystem of a region. | retrospective studies | Studies used to test aetiologic hypotheses in which inferences about an exposure to putative causal factors are derived from data relating to characteristics of persons under study or to events or experiences in their past. The essential feature is that some of the persons under study have the disease or outcome of interest and their characteristics are compared with those of unaffected persons. (12 Dec 1998) |

Clinical studies routinely involve the use of a placebo group that is given an inactive substance that looks like the test product. (14 Nov 1997) |
| cohort studies | Studies in which subsets of a defined population are identified. These groups may or may not be exposed to factors hypothesised to influence the probability of the occurrence of a particular disease or other outcome. Cohorts are defined populations which, as a whole, are followed in an attempt to determine distinguishing subgroup characteristics. (12 Dec 1998) |
