alveolar septum The tissue intervening between two adjacent pulmonary alveoli; it consists of a close-meshed capillary network covered on both surfaces by very thin alveolar epithelial cells, one of the bony partitions between the tooth sockets.
Synonym: septum interalveolare, alveolar septum, septal bone.
(05 Mar 2000)
alveolar soft part sarcoma <tumour> A malignant tumour formed of a reticular stroma of connective tissue enclosing aggregates of large round or polygonal cells; occurs in subcutaneous and fibromuscular tissues.
(05 Mar 2000)
alveolar supporting bone alveolar process
alveolar ventilation The volume of gas expired from the alveoli to the outside of the body per minute; calculated as the respiratory frequency (f) multiplied by the difference between tidal volume and the dead space (VT -VD); units: ml/min BTPS.
(05 Mar 2000)
alveolar yoke One of the eminences on the outer surface of the alveolar process of the maxilla or mandible, formed by the roots of the incisor teeth.
Synonym: alveolar yoke.
(05 Mar 2000)
alveolar-arterial oxygen difference The difference or gradient between the partial pressure of oxygen in the alveolar spaces and the arterial blood: P(A-a)02. Normally in young adults this value is less than 20 mm Hg.
See: alveolar gas equation.
(05 Mar 2000)
alveolate Pitted or honeycombed on the surface.
(09 Oct 1997)
alveolectomy Subtotal or complete excision of the alveolar process of the maxilla or mandible.
(12 Dec 1998)
alveoli A small cell containing air in the lungs, a sac-like dilation of the alveolar ducts in the lung (plural: alveoli)
(27 Sep 1997)
alveoli pulmonis One of the thin-walled saclike terminal dilations of the respiratory bronchioles, alveolar ducts, and alveolar sacs across which gas exchange occurs between alveolar air and the pulmonary capillaries.
Synonym: alveoli pulmonis, alveolus, air cells, air vesicles, bronchic cells.
(05 Mar 2000)
alveolingual Relating to the lingual (inner) surface of the alveolar process of the lower jaw.
Synonym: alveolingual.
(05 Mar 2000)
alveolitis <pathology> Inflammation of an alveolus.
Synonym: odontobothritis.
(18 Nov 1997)
alveolitis, extrinsic allergic Conditions in which inhalation of organic dusts results in hypersensitivity reactions at the alveolar level, associated with the production of precipitins.
(12 Dec 1998)
alveolo- An alveolus, the alveolar process; alveolar.
Origin: L. Alveolus, a concave vessel, a bowl, a basin, fr. Alveus, a trough, + -olus, small, little; akin to alvus, the belly, the womb
(05 Mar 2000)
alveolobuccal groove The upper and lower half of the buccal vestibule on each side.
