Term used to describe an atypical plumage, structural characteristic, or behavior in an animal or plant. Many martin landlords mistakenly believe that they have one or more Purple Martins that return to their colony sites, year after year, with aberrant white wing feathers. In reality, all Purple Martins have patches of white flank feathers that stick up conspicuously behind the wings during certain conditions of feature erection.
