vaccinia v. a virus of the genus Orthopoxvirus that does not occur in nature, being propagated only in the laboratory for use as an active vaccine against smallpox. The present virus is derived from the original one used by Jenner, obtained from the lesions of cowpox, but the origin of the original virus remains unclear. Some believe that vaccinia virus is a derivative of the immunologically similar but antigenically different viruses of cowpox and variola (smallpox), while others think that it may be a recombinant of these viruses.
