(ul-tra-so-NO-gra-fee) A test in which sound waves are bounced off tissues and the echoes are converted into a picture (a sonogram). These pictures are shown on a monitor that's similar to a TV screen. Tissues of different densities vary in the picture because they reflect sound waves differently. A sonogram can show whether a breast lump is a fluid-filled cyst or a solid mass.
