One of the Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, in which ulcers form in the surface lining of the colon and rectum. Severe, often bloody, diarrhoea is the primary symptom of this disease, which comes and goes unpredictably, and is experienced most often by children, young adults and people over 60. Removal of the colon and at least the surface layer of the rectum is curative in severe cases. The cause of the disease is unknown.
