(05 Mar 2000)
palatine ridge A rather narrow, low elevation in the centre of the hard palate that extends from the incisive papilla posteriorly over the entire length of the mucosa of the hard palate.
Synonym: raphe palati, palatine ridge.
(05 Mar 2000)
ganglion ridge A group of embryonic cells that separate from the neural plate during neurulation and migrate to give several different lineages of adult cells: the spinal and autonomic ganglia, the glial cells of the peripheral nervous system and nonneuronal cells, such as chromaffin cells, melanocytes and some haemopoietic cells.
(18 Nov 1997)
mammary ridge Bandlike thickening of ectoderm in the embryo extending on either side from just below the axilla to the inguinal region; in human embryos, the mammary glands arise from primordia in the thoracic part of the ridge, the balance of the ridge disappearing; in some lower mammals which give birth to a litter of young, several milk glands develop along these lines.
Synonym: mammary fold, milk line, milk ridge.
(05 Mar 2000)
marginal ridge The rounded borders which form the mesial and distal margins of the occlusal surface of a tooth.
Synonym: crista marginalis, marginal ridge.
(05 Mar 2000)
genital ridge An elevation of thickened mesothelium and underlying mesenchyme on the ventromedial border of the embryonic mesonephros; the primordial germ cells become embedded in it, establishing it as the primordium of the testis or ovary.
Synonym: genital ridge.
(05 Mar 2000)
Passavant's ridge A prominence on the posterior wall of the naso-pharynx formed by contraction of the superior constrictor of the pharynx during swallowing.
Synonym: Passavant's bar, Passavant's pad, Passavant's ridge.
(05 Mar 2000)
medial epicondylar ridge The distal sharp portion of the medial margin of the humerus.
Synonym: crista supracondylaris medialis, medial epicondylar crest, medial epicondylar ridge, medial supracondylar crest.
(05 Mar 2000)
medial supracondylar ridge The distal sharp portion of the medial margin of the humerus.
Synonym: crista supracondylaris medialis, medial epicondylar crest, medial epicondylar ridge, medial supracondylar crest.
(05 Mar 2000)
pectoral ridge The ridge below the greater tubercle of the humerus into which the pectoralis major muscle inserts.
Synonym: crista tuberculi majoris, bicipital ridges, pectoral ridge.
(05 Mar 2000)
gluteal ridge The point of insertion on the upper portion of the shaft of the femur of the greater part of the gluteus maximus muscle; when markedly developed this tuberosity is called the third trochanter.
Synonym: trochanter tertius, tuberositas glutea, crista glutea, gluteal crest, gluteal ridge.
(05 Mar 2000)
residual ridge That portion of the processus alveolaris remaining in the edentulous mouth following resorption of the section containing the alveoli.
(05 Mar 2000)
centre of ridge The buccolingual midline of the residual ridge.
(05 Mar 2000)
gonadal ridge An elevation of thickened mesothelium and underlying mesenchyme on the ventromedial border of the embryonic mesonephros; the primordial germ cells become embedded in it, establishing it as the primordium of the testis or ovary.
Synonym: genital ridge.
(05 Mar 2000)
mesonephric ridge A ridge which, in early human embryos, comprises the entire urogenital ridge; however, later in development a more medial genital ridge, the potential gonad, is demarcated from it.
See: urogenital ridge.
Synonym: mesonephric fold.
