| synonym |
One of two or more words in a languge which have the same or very nearly the same meaning. In the context of sensemaking, it is important to note that whether two words are synonyms depends on context. For example, in many contexts the terms man and woman are not synonyms since they refer to opposite genders. On the other hand, in a gender-neutral context, both terms can be synonyms with each other and with person. See also synonymy, term-equivalence dictionary, and word sense.
