It began as a rejection of the purely visual realism of the Impressionists, and the rationality of the Industrial Age, in order to depict the symbols of ideas. Traditionally modeled pictorial depictions are replaced or contrasted by flat mosaic-like surfaces decoratively embellished with figures and design elements.
