suramin hexasodium an antitrypanosomal and antifilarial agent, used in the prophylaxis and treatment of African trypanosomiasis and in the treatment of onchocerciasis (for which use it has largely been replaced by ivermectin); it also suppresses growth of and hormone production by adrenocortical cells and is used in the treatment of inoperable, metastasizing adrenocortical cancer. Called also suramin sodium.
