| band III protein | <protein> A 90 kD protein embedded in the surface of the human erythrocyte membrane, identified as the major anion transport/exchange protein. When the red blood cell is in the lungs, brings chlorine ion into the cell in exchange for bicarbonate. Analogous proteins exist in other erythrocytes.
