| acinar cell tumour | A solid and cystic tumour of the pancreas, occurring in young women; tumour cells contain zymogen granules. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| acinic cell adenocarcinoma | <tumour> An adenocarcinoma arising from secreting cells of a racemose gland, particularly the salivary glands. Synonym: acinar carcinoma, acinic cell carcinoma, acinose carcinoma, acinous carcinoma. (05 Mar 2000) |
| acinic cell carcinoma | <tumour> An adenocarcinoma arising from secreting cells of a racemose gland, particularly the salivary glands. Synonym: acinar carcinoma, acinic cell carcinoma, acinose carcinoma, acinous carcinoma. (05 Mar 2000) |
| acinous cell | Any secreting cell lining an acinus, especially applied to the cell's of the pancreas that furnish pancreatic juice and enzymes to distinguish them from the cell's of ducts and the islets of Langerhans. Synonym: acinous cell. (05 Mar 2000) |
| acoustic cell | A hair cell of the organ of Corti. (05 Mar 2000) |
| adenocarcinoma, clear cell | An adenocarcinoma characterised by the presence of varying combinations of clear and hobnail-shaped tumour cells. There are three predominant patterns described as tubulocystic, solid, and papillary. These tumours, usually located in the female reproductive organs, have been seen more frequently in young women since 1970 as a result of the association with intrauterine exposure to diethylstilbestrol. (12 Dec 1998) |
| adenoid squamous cell carcinoma | <tumour> A malignant neoplasm consisting chiefly of glandular epithelium (adenocarcinoma), usually well differentiated, with foci of metaplasia to squamous (or epidermoid) neoplastic cells. Synonym: adenoid squamous cell carcinoma. (05 Mar 2000) |
| adenoma, islet cell | A benign tumour of the islets of langerhans that may occur anywhere throughout the pancreas. Such tumours may result in hyperinsulinism or zollinger-ellison syndrome. (12 Dec 1998) |
| adenoma, liver cell | A benign epithelial tumour of the liver. (12 Dec 1998) |
| adipose cell | adipocyte |
| adult T-cell leukaemia | Lymph nodes show a mixture of small and large atypical cells which are polymorphic and express nuclear pleiomorphism. Adult T-cell leukaemia is caused by HTLV-1 and is rare in the US and Europe but common in Japan. Tumour cells express CD2, CD3, CD5 and lack CD7. The most common chromosome change reported in adult T-cell leukaemia is presence of the 14q + marker (05 Mar 2000) |
| adult T-cell lymphoma | <tumour> An acute or subacute disease associated with a human T-cell virus, with lymphadenopathy, hepatosplenomegaly, skin lesions, peripheral blood involvement, and hypercalcaemia. Synonym: adult T-cell leukaemia. (05 Mar 2000) |
| adventitial cell | <pathology> Cell associated with the walls of small blood vessels: not a smooth muscle cell, nor an endothelial cell. (18 Nov 1997) |
| african green monkey kidney cell | <cell culture> Cells taken from the kidneys of the African green monkey Cercopithecus aethiops sabaeus and used to grow certain viruses like poliovirus. (05 Feb 1998) |
| air cell | 1. <botany> A cavity in the cellular tissue of plants, containing air only. 2. <anatomy> A receptacle of air in various parts of the system; as, a cell or minute cavity in the walls of the air tubes of the lungs; the air sac of birds; a dilatation of the air vessels in insects. | somatic cell nuclear transfer |
A process whereby the nucleus of a somatic cell is removed and placed into an enucleated oocyte (ie an egg cell that has had its own nucleus ie all genetic information removed). The net result is to have the genetic information from the donor nucleus in control of the resulting cell. With further manipulation, such cells can be induced to form embryos. This process was used to create the cloned sheep "Dolly".

| somatic cell |
A cell with a nucleus containing two copies of each chromosome. This is distinct from a germ cell such as sperm or egg that only has one copy of each chromosome.
