| sclerotic coat | <anatomy> The tough white outer coat of the eyeball, covering approximately the posterior five sixths of its surface and continuous anteriorly with the cornea and posteriorly with the external sheath of the optic nerve. Origin: L., Gr. Skleros = hard (18 Nov 1997) |

| egg coat | A layer of glycoproteins and other stuff which surrounds an egg (ovum), just outside of the egg's cell membrane. The coat protects the egg, and for organisms which practice external fertilization (fertilization outside of the parents' bodies) it can help prevent the sperm of other species from entering the egg. For the eggs of mammals, the egg coat is called the zona pellucida and for sea urchins (a popular study organism for developmental biologists) it is called the vitelline layer. (09 Oct 1997) |
| longitudinal layer of muscular coat | The outer, longitudinal layer of the smooth muscle of the muscular coat. Nomina Anatomica lists longitudinal layers of muscular coats (stratum longitudinale tunicae muscularis...) of the following: 1) colon (... Coli ); 2) rectum (... Recti ); 3) small intestine (... Intestini tenuis ); 4) stomach (... Gastrici ). Synonym: stratum longitudinale tunicae muscularis gastricae, stratum longitudinale tunicae muscularis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Bogros' serous membrane | A membrane of the episcleral space (of Tenon). (05 Mar 2000) |
| parietal layer of serous pericardium | The outer part of the serous pericardium suported by the fibrous pericardium. Synonym: lamina parietalis pericardii. (05 Mar 2000) |
| visceral layer of serous pericardium | The inner part of the serous pericardium applied directly on the heart. Synonym: epicardium, lamina visceralis pericardii. (05 Mar 2000) |
| central serous choroidopathy | Detachment of the sensory retina induced by decreased adhesion between cells of the retinal pigment epithelium which permits plasma from the choriocapillaris to enter subretinal space. Synonym: central angiospastic retinopathy, central serous retinopathy. (05 Mar 2000) |
| central serous retinopathy | Detachment of the sensory retina induced by decreased adhesion between cells of the retinal pigment epithelium which permits plasma from the choriocapillaris to enter subretinal space. Synonym: central angiospastic retinopathy, central serous retinopathy. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cystadenocarcinoma, serous | A malignant cystic or saemicystic neoplasm. It often occurs in the ovary and usually bilaterally. The external surface is usually covered with papillary excrescences. Microscopically, the papillary patterns are predominantly epithelial overgrowths with differentiated and undifferentiated papillary serous cystadenocarcinoma cells. Psammoma bodies may be present. The tumour generally adheres to surrounding structures and produces ascites. (12 Dec 1998) |
| cystadenoma, serous | A cystic tumour of the ovary, containing thin, clear, yellow serous fluid and varying amounts of solid tissue, with a malignant potential several times greater than that of mucinous cystadenoma (cystadenoma, mucinous). It can be unilocular, parvilocular, or multilocular. It is often bilateral and papillary. The cysts may vary greatly in size. (12 Dec 1998) |
| serous | <physiology> Thin; watery; like serum; as the serous fluids. Of or pertaining to serum; as, the serous glands, membranes, layers. <anatomy> See serous membrane. Origin: Cf. F. Sereux. (12 May 1998) |
| serous atrophy | A degenerative change occurring in fat cells, the fat being absorbed and its place being taken by a serous fluid. (05 Mar 2000) |
| serous cell | A cell, especially of the salivary gland, that secretes a watery or thin albuminous fluid, as opposed to a mucous cell. Synonym: albuminous cell. (05 Mar 2000) |
| serous cyst | A cyst containing clear serous fluid, such as a hygroma. (05 Mar 2000) |
| serous demilunes | The serous cells at the distal end of a mucous, tubuloalveolar secretory unit of certain salivary glands. Synonym: Giannuzzi's crescents, Giannuzzi's demilunes, Heidenhain's crescents, Heidenhain's demilunes. (05 Mar 2000) |
