butanol, butyl alcohol An alcohol with the chemical formula CH3(CH2)30H. It is formed during anaerobic fermentation using bacteria to convert the sugars to butanol and carbon dioxide.
(05 Dec 1998)
butyl alcohol C4H9OH;several isomeric forms are known:
(05 Mar 2000)
vanillyl-alcohol oxidase <enzyme> From penicillium simplicissimum; contains fad; forms vanillin or 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde, respectively, from vanillyl alcohol or 4-hydroxybenzyl alcohol
Registry number: EC 1.1.3.-
Synonym: 4-hydroxybenzyl alcohol oxidase
(26 Jun 1999)
palmityl alcohol The 16-carbon alcohol corresponding to palmitic acid, so called because it is isolated from among the hydrolysis products of spermaceti; it is used as an emulsifying aid and in the preparation of "washable" ointment bases.
Synonym: 1-hexadecanol, palmityl alcohol.
(05 Mar 2000)
pantothenyl alcohol D-(+)-2,4-dihydroxy-N-(3-hydroxypropyl)-3,3-dimethylbutyramide;pantothenic acid with -CH2OH replacing the terminal -COOH; a cholinergic agent and a dietary source of pantothenic acid.
Synonym: panthenol, pantothenyl alcohol.
(05 Mar 2000)
veratryl alcohol oxidase <enzyme> From pleurotus sajor-caju (polyporaceae); converts veratryl alcohol and various aromatic alcohols to aldehydes, reducing o2 to h2o2
Registry number: EC 1.1.3.-
Synonym: veratryl alcohol oxidase I, veratryl alcohol oxidase II
(26 Jun 1999)
vitamin A1 alcohol Vitamin A1alcohol; 2,6,6-trimethyl-1-(9'-hydroxy-3',7'-dimethylnona-1',3',5',7'-tetraenyl)cyclohex-1-ene;a half-carotene bearing the b (or beta-ionone) form of the cyclic end group and a CH2OH at the C-15 position (numbering as in carotenoids) or 9'-position (numbering as a nonyl side chain on a cyclohexene ring); an intermediate in the vision cycle, it also plays a role in growth and differentiation.
See: dehydroretinol.
Synonym: vitamin A1 alcohol, vitamin A1.
Retinol dehydrogenase, an oxidoreductase catalyzing interconversion of retinal and NADH to retinol and NAD+.
(05 Mar 2000)
glyceryl alcohol <biochemistry> A metabolic intermediate, but primarily of interest as the central structural component of the major classes of biological lipids, triglycerides and phosphatidyl phospholipids. Also used as a cryoprotectant.
(18 Nov 1997)
cetostearyl alcohol A component of the hydrophilic ointment ingredient known as emulsifying wax; a mixture of solid aliphatic alcohols consisting chiefly of stearyl and cetyl alcohols.
(05 Mar 2000)
cetyl alcohol The 16-carbon alcohol corresponding to palmitic acid, so called because it is isolated from among the hydrolysis products of spermaceti; it is used as an emulsifying aid and in the preparation of "washable" ointment bases.
Synonym: 1-hexadecanol, palmityl alcohol.
(05 Mar 2000)
grain alcohol <chemical> An organic chemical containing one or more hydroxyl groups. Alcohols can be liquids, semisolids or solids at room temperature.
Common alcohols include ethanol (the type found in alcoholic beverages) methanol (found in methylated spirit and can cause blindness and other nervous system damage if ingested) and propanol.
(06 May 1997)
methyl alcohol CH3OH;a flammable, toxic, mobile liquid, used as an industrial solvent, antifreeze, and in chemical manufacture; ingestion may result in severe acidosis, visual impairment, and other effects on the central nervous system.
Synonym: carbinol, methanol, pyroligneous alcohol, pyroligneous spirit, pyroxylic spirit, wood alcohol, wood naphtha, wood spirit.
(05 Mar 2000)

Pharmacological action: anti-infective agents, local, disinfectants, preservatives, pharmaceutical.
Chemical name: Benzeneethanol
(12 Dec 1998)
phenyl alcohol <chemistry>
1. A white or pinkish crystalline substance, C6H5OH, produced by the destructive distillation of many organic bodies, as wood, coal, etc, and obtained from the heavy oil from coal tar.
It has a peculiar odour, somewhat resembling creosote, which is a complex mixture of phenol derivatives. It is of the type of alcohols, and is called also phenyl alcohol, but has acid properties, and hence is popularly called carbolic acid, and was formerly called phenic acid. It is a powerful caustic poison, and in dilute solution has been used as an antiseptic.
2. Any one of the series of hydroxyl derivatives of which phenol proper is the type.
<chemistry> Glacial phenol, any one of a series of compounds having both phenol and aldehyde properties. Phenol phthalein. See Phthalein.
