Scoliosis is an abnormal, curvature of the spine. Scoliosis has many causes; some due to injury while others are inherited. One common reason for scoliosis is abnormal development of the vertebra in the spine. This is a lateral (sideways) curvature of the spine, associated with rotation, so that, in the thoracic spine, the ribs on the convex side are displaced backwards. It is very common, with 25% of the population having some degree of spinal asymmetry in childhood.
