acute pulmonary alveolitis Acute inflammation involving exudate into the pulmonary alveoli and impaired gas exchange; may result in necrosis with haemorrhage into the lungs; occurs in Goodpasture's syndrome, in association with a glomerulonephritis.
(05 Mar 2000)
acute pulmonary eosinophilia <chest medicine> A self-limiting inflammation in the lungs where there is associated infiltration of eosinophils into lung tissue. Chest X-ray reveals pulmonary infiltrates and full blood count shows increased numbers of eosinophils.
The cause is unknown and the disease often resolves without treatment. Some forms may be treated with oral corticosteroids. Complications include restrictive cardiomyopathy due to fibrosis of the lining of the heart.
(27 Sep 1997)
adenomatosis, pulmonary A neoplastic disease in which the alveoli and distal bronchi are filled with mucus and mucus-secreting columnar epithelial cells. It is characterised by abundant, extremely tenacious sputum, chills, fever, cough, dyspnea, and pleuritic pain.
(12 Dec 1998)
apicoposterior branch of left superior pulmonary vein <anatomy, vein> Drains apicoposterior bronchopulmonary segment of superior lobe of left lung.
Synonym: ramus apicoposterior venae pulmonalis sinistrae superioris.
(05 Mar 2000)
bifurcation of pulmonary trunk The division of the pulmonary trunk into right and left pulmonary arteries.
Synonym: bifurcatio trunci pulmonalis.
(05 Mar 2000)
valve of pulmonary trunk <anatomy, cardiology> The heart valve that divides the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery. The pulmonic valve opens when the right ventricle contracts allowing blood to flow into the pulmonary artery. The pulmonic valve on closure prohibits the backwash of unoxygenated blood into the right ventricle. The pulmonic valve has 3 valve cusps.
(27 Sep 1997)
vein, pulmonary One of four vessels that carry aerated blood from the lungs to the right atrium of the heart. (the four are the right and left superior and inferior pulmonary veins). The pulmonary veins are the only veins that carry bright red oxygenated blood.
(12 Dec 1998)
resistance, pulmonary The opposition of the respiratory tree to air flow.
(12 Dec 1998)
reverse pulmonary oedema pattern <radiology> Loeffler pneumonia, chronic eosinophilic pneumonia
(12 Dec 1998)
granuloma, plasma cell, pulmonary A pseudotumour of the lung composed of inflammatory cells and showing complete maturity of fibroblastic components with a striking lack of mitosis. It is also called postinflammatory pseudotumour and pseudoneoplastic pneumonitis. (berardi, r.s. Et al. Inflammatory pseudotumours of the lung. Surg gynecol obstet 156:89-96, jan 83)
(12 Dec 1998)
right inferior pulmonary vein <anatomy, vein> The vein returning oxygenated blood from the inferior lobe of the right lung to the left atrium.
Synonym: vena pulmonalis inferior dextra.
(05 Mar 2000)
right superior pulmonary vein <anatomy, vein> The vein returning oxygenated blood from the superior and middle lobes of the right lung to the left atrium.
Synonym: vena pulmonalis superior dextra.
(05 Mar 2000)
chronic obstructive pulmonary disease <disease> A progressive disease process that most commonly results from smoking. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is characterised by difficulty breathing, wheezing and a chronic cough.
Treatment includes absolute avoidance from smoking, bronchodilators and oxygen for those with advanced disease. Complications include bronchitis, pneumonia and lung cancer.
See: emphysema.
(27 Sep 1997)
