polyploidy The genetic condition where a species or an individual has multiple genomes (several complete sets of chromosomes). If it is simple chromosome doubling it is often called an autoploid or auto-polyploid (eg alfalfa and potato). If different species are hybridized the result is a allo-polyploid (eg wheat and oat).
