plicamycin [USP] an antineoplastic antibiotic, produced by Streptomyces plicatus, that binds to DNA and inhibits RNA synthesis; it is used for treatment of advanced testicular carcinoma. It also has an inhibiting effect on osteoclasts and is used to treat hypercalcemia and hypercalciuria caused by metastatic malignancy. Administered intravenously. Formerly called mithramycin.
