plaque A substance that accumulates in coronary arteries, clogs these arteries, and may eventually lead to heart disease and heart attack. Plaque is formed when excess cholesterol is deposited in the artery walls as it travels through the bloodstream. Special cells in the artery wall envelop the excess cholesterol, forming a bump in the artery wall. A hard coating, or scar, then forms over the cholesterol/cell mixture, creating plaque.
