Procedure which enables a reduction in the level of bilirubin (a substance produced by the destruction fo red blood cells) in the newborn infant using light rays (UV) which destroy this substance through the infant's skin. Excess bilirubin is responsible at birth for neonatal jaundice and, if not treated, may cause lesions (principally of a neurological nature) in the infant.
