| pheromone |
Pheromones are chemical messages relayed between members of the same animal and insect species. They are used to attract members of the opposite sex, to mark trails and territory, and as warnings. Each insect (or animal) has its own complex chemical pheromone, some of which have been identified and used in traps to monitor and sometimes control pest populations. In other cases, pheromones are used to confuse or lure insect pests away from target crops.
