Here, the patient's own abdominal cavity lining ( peritoneal membrane) is used to filter impurities from the blood into a dialysis solution. The dialysis solution is passed in and out of the abdomen through a tube and is usually (such as with CAPD) left in for a few hours before it is removed, rather than introduced and removed in a continuous stream.
