| pericardial window |
A procedure in which an opening is made in the pericardium to drain fluid that has accumulated around the heart. A pericardial window can be made via a small incision below the end of the breastbone (sternum) or via a small incision between the ribs on the left side of the chest.

| pericardial effusion |
Collection of fluid or blood in the sack (pericardium) that surrounds the heart. Causes include congestive heart failure, cancer, and autoimmune disease.

A life-threatening syndrome in which fluid (usually blood) collects in the sack (pericardium) that surrounds the heart and interferes with its performance. Untreated, condition can result in low blood pressure, shock, and death.

| pericardial friction rub |
Inflammation of the pericardial sac causes the parietal and visceral surfaces of the roughened pericardium to rub against each other. This produces an extra cardiac sound of to-and-fro character with both systolic and diastolic components. One, two, or three components of a pericardial friction rub may be audible. A three-component rub indicates the presence of pericarditis and serves to distinguish a pericardial rub from a pleural friction rub, which ordinarily has two components. ...
