a slowly expanding, spherical, granulomatous lesion adjacent to the root apex of a tooth, usually occurring as a complication of pulpitis, which consists of a proliferating mass of chronic inflammatory tissue enclosed within a fibrous capsule that is an extension of the periodontal ligament. Called also apical g. and chronic apical periodontitis.
