  • Parasympathetic Nervous System - »õâ The craniosacral division of the autonomic nervous system. The cell bodies of the parasympathetic preganglionic fibers are in brain stem nuclei and in the sacral spinal cord. They synapse in cranial autonomic ganglia or in terminal ganglia near target organs. The parasympathetic nervous system generally acts to conserve resources and restore homeostasis, often with effects reciprocal to the sympathetic nervous system.
Synonyms : Nervous System, Parasympathetic, Nervous Systems, Parasympathetic, Parasympathetic Nervous Systems, System, Parasympathetic Nervous, Systems, Parasympathetic Nervous
  • Parasympatholytics - »õâ Agents that inhibit the actions of the parasympathetic nervous system. The major group of drugs used therapeutically for this purpose is the MUSCARINIC ANTAGONISTS.
Synonyms : Antispasmodic Agents, Antispasmodic Drugs, Parasympatholytic Agents, Parasympatholytic Drugs, Agents, Antispasmodic, Agents, Parasympathetic-Blocking, Agents, Parasympatholytic, Drugs, Antispasmodic, Drugs, Parasympatholytic, Parasympathetic Blocking Agents
  • Parasympathomimetics - »õâ Drugs that mimic the effects of parasympathetic nervous system activity. Included here are drugs that directly stimulate muscarinic receptors and drugs that potentiate cholinergic activity, usually by slowing the breakdown of acetylcholine (CHOLINESTERASE INHIBITORS). Drugs that stimulate both sympathetic and parasympathetic postganglionic neurons (GANGLIONIC STIMULANTS) are not included here.
Synonyms : Parasympathomimetic Agents, Parasympathomimetic Drugs, Agents, Parasympathomimetic, Drugs, Parasympathomimetic
  • Parasystole - »õâ A cardiac arrhythmia caused by the interaction of two foci independently initiating cardiac impulses at different rates. Generally one of the foci is the sinoatrial node (the normal pacemaker) and the ectopic focus is usually in the ventricle, but can occur in the sinus and AV nodes, atrium and ventricle, and AV junction. Each focus - and thus each rhythm - is protected from the influence of the other.
    Synonyms : Parasystoles
