Unable to tolerate the frustrations of the restrictions civilization places on sexual life, the neurotic "substitutes" satisfactions, which are manifested as "symptoms." Such symptoms might be physical tics, pain, odd postures, illnesses (eg, coughing), or acute manifestations of anxiety.
