melting The denaturation of double-stranded DNA into two single strands by the application of heat. (Denaturation breaks the hydrogen bonds holding the double-stranded DNA together).

melting p. the minimum temperature at which a solid begins to liquefy. See also freezing p. Cf. melting temperature and fusion temperature.

melting t. in molecular biology, the temperature at which half the length of a double-stranded nucleic acid becomes single-stranded; it is a function of the degree of match or mismatch between the two strands, the percentage of guanine-cytosine pairs in the molecule, and other variables. Cf. melting point.

Meltzer's s. loss of the normal second sound, heard on auscultation of the heart after swallowing; symptomatic of occlusion or contraction of the lower part of the esophagus.

melting temperature (T m ) is the temperature point in a hybridization reaction at which 50% of the nucleotides are annealed (double strands) and 50% are denatured (single strands). The melting temperature is dependent on a set of conditions which are referred to as stringency.
