Leukopenia indicates a decreased total WBC count. It is usually characterized by decreased numbers of circulating neutrophils. The most common causes of leukopenia are excessive consumption in an inflammatory process and primary bone marrow disease. Persistent leukopenia is a poor prognostic sign. [back to top]
