| hepatic encephalopathy | <neurology, pathology> A condition which is used to describe the deleterious effects of liver failure on the central nervous system. Features include confusion ranging to unresponsiveness (coma). A common cause is alcoholic cirrhosis. Treatment includes the binding and elimination of ammonia in the intestinal tract.
