laity Lay people are those who do not belong to the clergy or other religious orders. In the Middle Ages, lay people were generally presumed to be illiterate and to have no knowledge of Latin. The actual facts of medieval literacy were more complex, but it is certainly accurate as a generalization to say that the average lay person, even if of high social standing, could not read.
