Kraepelin Emil, 1856–1926. German psychiatrist; the father of descriptive psychiatry. He differentiated manic-depressive psychosis from dementia praecox (schizophrenia) and described the basic schizophrenic subtypes: catatonic, hebephrenic, and paranoid. Modern classifications of the psychoses are still essentially kraepelinian.
