underdeveloped tissue. Both "atrophy" and "hypoplasia" can lead to smaller than normal amounts of tissue, but atrophy implies that normal tissue was once present and hypoplasia implies that normal tissue never developed. Both processes appear to occur in the brains of girls with RS.
