H. anato´licum is a cattle tick of Africa, India, and southern Europe, which may transmit hemorrhagic fever and a Middle Eastern variety of equine encephalomyelitis. H. margina´tum transmits Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever. H. maurita´nicum transmits Theileria parva, a protozoan parasite that causes many deaths in cattle in northern Africa.
