| homozygote |
A person who has two gene alleles identical in certain respects. In HD this term is used for a person who has two defective HD gene alleles, one from each parent. Research has shown that homozygotes tend to begin exhibiting HD symptoms at about the same time as heterozygotes (those who have only one defective allele), but the disease progresses faster and with more severe symptoms in homozygotes.
