glycine hydroxymethyltransferase [EC 2.1.2.1] an enzyme of the transferase class that catalyzes the reversible transfer of a methylene group from serine to tetrahydrofolate to form 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate and glycine. The enzyme is a pyridoxal phosphate protein. The reaction occurs in mitochondria and is a major source of one-carbon units for folate-mediated transfer reactions. Called also serine hydroxymethyltransferase.
