glutamate decarboxylase [EC 4.1.1.15] an enzyme of the lyase class that catalyzes the decarboxylation of glutamate to form γ-aminobutyrate (GABA). The enzyme is a pyridoxal phosphate protein, and the reaction occurs within the mitochondria in kidney, and outside the mitochondria in brain. Deficiency of the brain enzyme may be the cause of convulsions that begin in infancy and are responsive to pyridoxine therapy.

glutamate dehydrogenase [NAD(P)+] [EC 1.4.1.3] an enzyme of the oxidoreductase class that catalyzes the oxidative deamination of glutamate to form α-ketoglutarate, using either NAD+ or NADP+as an electron acceptor. The reversible reaction has a major function in both synthesis and degradation of glutamic acid and, via transaminases, other amino acids as well.

glutamate formiminotransferase [EC 2.1.2.5] an enzyme of the transferase class that catalyzes the transfer of a formimino group from formiminoglutamate to tetrahydrofolate, forming 5-formiminotetrahydrofolate. The reaction is a step in the degradation of histidine. The enzyme is bifunctional; it also contains a catalytic site with formiminotetrahydrofolate cyclodeaminase (q.v.) activity. Urinary excretion of formiminoglutamate and mental retardation have been associated with decreased enzyme activity, resulting from either a genetic disorder or a deficiency of tetrahydrofolate. Called also formiminotransferase.

glutamate-ammonia ligase [EC 6.3.1.2] an enzyme of the ligase class that catalyzes the ATP-dependent amination of glutamate by ammonium ions to form glutamine. Called also glutamine synthetase.

glutamate-cysteine ligase [EC 6.3.2.2] an enzyme of the ligase class that catalyzes the ATP-dependent formation of a peptide bond between the γ-carboxyl group of glutamate and the amino group of cysteine to form γ-glutamylcysteine as a step in the synthesis of glutathione.
